Built by Anthropic, Claude is dubbed a “next-generation AI assistant” that can help you with a host of tasks.

For most of the past two years, the story has been the same: Claude has a dedicated, vocal userbase but tends to sit in the shadow of ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok. That changed dramatically in March 2026.

Claude jumped from under 2% of U.S. mobile chatbot DAU share in December to 10% in March – a 167% month-on-month surge that Apptopia called “a step function, not a trend line.” Its web traffic share tripled in a single quarter. Anthropic closed a $30 billion Series G at a $380 billion valuation in February, and by late April Google had committed up to $40 billion more. Annualised revenue has gone from roughly $5 billion last August to over $30 billion by April 2026 – arguably the fastest revenue scaling in tech history.

So how does Claude actually stack up now? Let’s go through the key Claude usage stats for May 2026.

Claude Usage Stats May 2026 – The Highlights

    • The Claude website now sees an estimated 300–600 million monthly visits (up from 176 million in December 2025)
    • Claude has reached 10% U.S. mobile DAU share as of March 2026, the third-largest AI chatbot app
    • Claude’s web traffic grew 297% year-on-year through early 2026
    • Claude’s power users now spend 139 minutes per day in the app
    • Anthropic’s annualised revenue has reached $30+ billion (up from $9B at end of 2025)
    • Anthropic closed a $30 billion Series G at a $380 billion valuation in February 2026
    • Google committed up to $40 billion in April 2026
    • Over 300,000 business customers and 1,000+ spending more than $1M/year

How Many People Use Claude In 2026?

Like all AI platforms, obtaining concrete user statistics is difficult because Anthropic does not publish them in a consolidated form. But the third-party signals all point in the same direction: Claude’s userbase has grown faster in the last three months than at any point in its history.

The most recent estimates put Claude’s consumer userbase at roughly 30 million monthly active users, up from 18.9 million at the start of the year. That number is conservative – it doesn’t include enterprise API users or developers using Claude through partners like AWS, Google Cloud, and Databricks. Including those indirect channels, total reach is estimated to be in the hundreds of millions.

On mobile specifically, AICPB and Apptopia’s numbers both showed Claude crossing into double-digit DAU share in March – something it had never come close to before. On February 28, 2026, the Claude iOS app hit #1 overall in the U.S. App Store for the first time, surpassing ChatGPT for daily downloads on that date.

For comparison, here’s how Claude stacks up among the major AI platforms by web traffic in March 2026:

AI Platform Approx. Monthly Web Visits (Mar 2026) Global Ranking
    ChatGPT 5.5 billion Top 10
    Gemini 2.0+ billion Top 30
    DeepSeek 450 million
    Grok 326 million
Claude ~600 million (Similarweb) #73 globally
    Perplexity 187 million
    Copilot ~100 million

In short: a year ago Claude sat below Perplexity. As of March 2026 it’s above Grok and closing rapidly on Gemini.

Two more stats worth pulling out from the recent data:

    • Claude’s web traffic share of all generative AI traffic went from 2.22% in December 2025 to 6.02% in March 2026 – nearly tripling in a single quarter
    • Claude Code’s weekly active users doubled between January and April 2026

These together explain why the platform is no longer a quiet niche player – it’s the fastest-growing major AI assistant by almost any metric.

    Who Uses Claude The Most?

After checking Similarweb’s analysis of the Claude website, we can see who uses the platform more than anyone else. The standout statistic remains striking: 51.88% of users are aged 18 to 24.

That’s the majority of Claude users, but it might not shock you that much. However, when you look at other big AI platforms (ChatGPT and Gemini), our research shows that the 25 to 34 age range is the biggest category for both. Having over half of your users in one specific age range is quite staggering – here’s a closer look at all the age demographics:

    • 18-24: 51.88%
    • 25-34: 25%
    • 35-44: 11.88%
    • 45-54: 8.13%
    • 55-64: 2.21%
    • 65 and over: 1.14%

Finding the split between male and female Claude users is slightly more complicated because Anthropic doesn’t publish it, so we have to rely on data from third-party sources. The Similarweb analysis reports that 60.3% of Claude users are male, and 39.7% are female, while Semrush puts the split closer to 77% male and 23% female. The difference is methodological – Semrush measures search-driven interest, while Similarweb tracks actual website visitors.

Rounding off this section on who uses Claude, we can look at where most users come from. Semrush showcases that 24.28% of all Claude users come from the United States.

    Country Percentage of Claude Users
    United States 24.28%
    India 6.95%
    Japan 4.28%
    United Kingdom 3.54%
    Brazil 3.53%

That US-heavy distribution is notable in the enterprise context too – over 80% of Anthropic’s enterprise revenue comes from American customers, including 8 of the Fortune 10 and roughly 70% of the Fortune 100.

    How People Are Using Claude

For a long time the running joke was that Claude is the AI for coders. The data still mostly bears that out, but the picture is broadening.

Based on Anthropic’s Economic Index reports and updated through early 2026:

    • 34% of all tasks on Claude revolve around computer and mathematical tasks – the most dominant category, though down from 40% in March 2025 as Claude’s userbase has diversified
    • 15% of Claude’s tasks fell into the Educational Instruction and Library category – up from 9% in January 2025, displaying that more and more people use Claude for educational purposes
    • 13% of tasks in Claude were categorised as Office and Administrative Support – up 3% in just four months, driven mostly by users automating routine admin work
    • 52% of Claude conversations were classified as augmentation, and 45% automation – meaning users prefer working with Claude collaboratively rather than firing off one-shot requests

The augmentation finding is worth dwelling on. Augmentation tasks involve a lot of collaboration between the human user and Claude – refining outputs, iterating, and treating the AI as a partner rather than a vending machine. The dominance of augmentation over automation is consistent with Claude’s reputation among professional users for being good at sustained, multi-turn work.

Anthropic’s research also reveals some headline data on speed:

    • Claude completes high-school tasks 9x faster than the human average
    • Claude completes college-level tasks 12x faster than the human average

Suggesting users see better productivity gains when dealing with slightly more complex tasks.

    Claude AI Market Share Statistics

Let’s look at where Claude ranks amongst other AI tools in terms of the general market share. We’ve picked out two different cuts of the data because the picture varies enormously depending on which one you choose.

Global AI Web Traffic Share (March 2026)

    AI Platform Market Share
    ChatGPT 56.7%
    Gemini 25.5%
    Grok ~6%
    Claude ~6%
    DeepSeek 3.7%
    Perplexity 2.0%
    Copilot 1.1%

Source: Similarweb data via Trending Topics and investor Rihard Jarc’s April 2026 analysis.

Claude has tripled its slice of the AI web traffic pie in three months, edging level with Grok and clearly ahead of Perplexity. A year ago Claude sat at around 1.4% – this trajectory is the fastest in the dataset.

    U.S. Mobile App DAU Share

AI Platform (U.S. Mobile) Dec 2025 Feb 2026 Mar 2026
    ChatGPT ~50% ~42% 38.7%
    Gemini ~22% ~25% ~25%
    Grok 14% 15.3% 13.5%
    Claude <2% 4.0% 10.0%
    Copilot ~10% ~10% ~10%

Source: Apptopia, Gen AI Chatbots data briefs (March and April 2026).

This is the more dramatic chart. Claude went from a rounding error in December to the third-largest AI chatbot app by daily active users in three months. The single-month March surge alone delivered 7.4 million downloads – nearly triple Claude’s February total, and more than 14x what it was pulling in September 2025.

    Engagement: The Most Telling Number

Apptopia’s VP of Research Tom Grant called out engagement as the metric that matters most when interpreting Claude’s March surge:

Claude’s power users are now spending 139 minutes per day in the app, up from 98 in February, and its power user churn dropped to 12%. That combination of rapid user acquisition and deepening engagement among heavy users is exactly what you’d want to see if you’re underwriting Anthropic’s valuation.

For context, Microsoft Copilot leads at 154 minutes per day for power users, and Grok’s power users spend 120 minutes. Claude has effectively gone from a niche product with relatively shallow engagement to one of the highest-engagement AI apps on the market.

    Anthropic’s Business: Revenue and Funding

This is where the story gets eye-watering. Anthropic’s revenue trajectory has compressed what most enterprise software companies achieve over a decade into about eighteen months.

    • Annualised revenue: ~$1 billion at start of 2025 → ~$5 billion in August 2025 → ~$9 billion at end of 2025 → $30+ billion as of April 2026
    • Claude Code: Reached $500 million annualised by September 2025 → $1 billion by November → $2.5 billion by February 2026, more than doubling since January
    • 300,000+ business customers, with 1,000+ now spending over $1 million per year (doubled from 500+ in under two months as of April 2026)
    • 8 of the Fortune 10 are now Claude customers, and roughly 70% of the Fortune 100 use Claude
    • Enterprise accounts have grown 7x year-on-year in the past 12 months
    • Customers spending over $100,000/year have grown 7x in 12 months

    The Funding Stack

    • February 12, 2026: Anthropic closed a $30 billion Series G led by GIC and Coatue at a $380 billion post-money valuation. The round was originally targeted at $10 billion but increased multiple times due to investor demand
    • April 24, 2026: Google committed up to $40 billion – $10 billion immediately at a $350 billion valuation, with the remaining $30 billion tied to Anthropic hitting performance milestones. Google also agreed to deliver 5 gigawatts of compute capacity over five years
    • April 2026: Amazon committed an additional $5 billion immediately, with up to $20 billion to follow, on top of $8 billion previously invested. Anthropic has committed over $100 billion to AWS over 10 years in exchange for up to 5 GW of compute
    • April 29, 2026: Reuters reported Anthropic is weighing a new round that would value it above $900 billion – which would make it the most valuable private company in the world, ahead of OpenAI
    • May 6, 2026: Anthropic signed a compute deal with SpaceX to provide additional Colossus 1 capacity – the same compute infrastructure xAI built for Grok

Total funding raised: over $80 billion across all rounds. Forge Private Market Index data as of mid-May 2026 puts Anthropic’s implied private market valuation at roughly $905 billion, suggesting the rumoured $900B+ round is essentially priced in.

    Claude’s Model Family in 2026

Two months ago, the headline model was Opus 4.5. As of May 2026, Anthropic has shipped four major model updates in a single quarter:

    • Claude Opus 4.6 (February 5, 2026) – introduced an agent team, Claude in PowerPoint, and the longest task-completion time horizon of any model tested (14h30m at 50% completion, per METR)
    • Claude Sonnet 4.6 (February 17, 2026) – delivered Opus-level intelligence at $3/$15 per million tokens. Developers preferred it over Sonnet 4.5 ~70% of the time, and even over the previous-generation Opus 4.5 ~59% of the time
    • Claude Mythos Preview (April 7, 2026) – the most capable model ever benchmarked at 93.9% on SWE-bench Verified, restricted under “Project Glasswing” to nine partners (AWS, Apple, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Google, JPMorgan Chase, Microsoft, Nvidia, Broadcom) for defensive cybersecurity work only. Anthropic has said Mythos is capable of finding zero-day vulnerabilities in major operating systems and browsers, and will not be made generally available
    • Claude Opus 4.7 (April 16, 2026) – the current flagship, with targeted coding upgrades, a new tokenizer, and stronger vision (up to 2,576 pixels on the long edge, ~3.75 MP)

Claude 5 is widely expected in the Q2–Q3 2026 window – prediction markets currently price June 2026 as the most likely launch.

    Products Beyond Chat

The product portfolio has also expanded:

    • Claude Code – now Anthropic’s fastest-growing product line at $2.5B annualised, used in production at Netflix, Spotify, KPMG, L’Oréal, and Salesforce
    • Claude in Excel – with MCP support for financial data providers like S&P Global, LSEG, PitchBook, Moody’s, and FactSet
    • Claude in Chrome – browsing agent powered by Haiku 4.5
    • Cowork – an agentic desktop app for Mac (Pro and Max plans)
    • Self-serve Enterprise plan – Anthropic now sells Enterprise directly through its website with no sales conversation required, a notable shift in go-to-market

    The Pentagon Story

One development that’s worth mentioning, because it provides important context for several of Claude’s growth numbers: Anthropic and the U.S. Department of Defense have publicly fallen out.

In late February 2026, Anthropic refused to remove its contractual prohibitions on the use of Claude for mass domestic surveillance and fully-autonomous weapons. In response, the DoD designated Anthropic a supply chain risk and federal agencies began phasing out Claude.

The interesting twist is what the public reaction looked like. Apptopia noted that Claude’s February DAU surge accelerated after news of the disagreement broke, with its iOS App Store rank hitting #1 on February 28. Claude’s churn rate (already the most improved in the dataset) dropped further. Whatever the commercial loss from federal contracts, the brand benefit among Claude’s consumer userbase appears to have been substantial – and aligned neatly with the start of its mobile-share explosion.

This is also the period in which OpenAI took the opposite approach, signing a high-profile deal to deploy ChatGPT on classified DoD networks – which triggered the 4-million-user boycott we covered in our ChatGPT stats post.

Claude Usage Stats May 2026 – The Key Takeaways

For most of the past two years, the line on Claude was that it was a beloved niche – great if you knew you wanted it, invisible to most consumers, and a small slice of the AI market. That line no longer holds.

Claude is now the third-largest AI chatbot app by daily active users in the U.S., with the deepest engagement growth in the industry. Anthropic’s annualised revenue has gone from $9 billion to over $30 billion in four months. Eight of the Fortune 10 and 70% of the Fortune 100 are paying customers. Google has committed up to $40 billion in new funding. The implied private market valuation is approaching $900 billion. And Claude Code is on pace to become the single fastest-growing product line in AI history.

The bear case is still real – federal agencies are exiting, the App Store competition will only intensify, and ChatGPT is fighting back with cheaper tiers. But Claude has gone from “small but credible” to “one of the four AI assistants operating at meaningful scale globally” in the space of three quarters. The question for the rest of 2026 is whether the mobile surge stabilises here or keeps climbing, and whether the Opus 4.7 → Claude 5 transition can sustain Anthropic’s revenue trajectory through the second half.
