There’s a lot of doom and gloom surrounding SEO and the impact AI is having on it, but the data suggests it’s still very much worth investing in right now (and with the future in mind).

SEO is still alive and well – and these stats prove that!

    1. Almost 70% of online experiences start with search engines

This has been the case for some time, and 68% of online experiences still begin with search engines. Despite the rise in AI platforms like ChatGPT or Gemini, most users still turn to Google when they start looking for something – especially when it relates to products or services.

    2. 29% of all web traffic comes from organic search

We’re talking about all web traffic across every industry here – and direct traffic (people typing in a website and going straight to it) is the only channel that’s higher, here. It’s a testament to the importance of SEO because, without optimising your website for search engines, you’re theoretically missing out on almost a third of your traffic potential.

    3. The #1 organic result in Google has a CTR of 27.6%

Effectively, if you’re at the top of the page for your niche, users are clicking on your link over a quarter of the time. What’s more, you’re 10 times less likely to receive a click if you’re on the first page but down in 10th position. This drops to close to 0% if you’re not on the first page at all, proving that a good SEO strategy is still well worth investing in right now.

    4. SEO services deliver up to 748% ROI

Some interesting analysis looking at the ROI of SEO in 2026 shows that it can generate up to a 748% return, with a 9-month time to breakeven. That looks at the impact of a full-on SEO service, including strategic planning, high-end content marketing and all the usual technical SEO elements. You can even achieve a 117% ROI by just investing in technical SEO.

When compared with other marketing tactics, SEO remains one of the best at generating high and consistent returns.

    5. SEO is the top marketing channel by ROI for 27% of businesses

Carrying the theme from above, 27% of businesses reported that SEO was their best-performing marketing channel in terms of ROI at the beginning of 2026. It outperforms paid social media content, organic social media content, social media shopping tools and even email marketing – which is, historically, excellent for ROI.

    6. 77% of users will turn to Google to find local business information

Local search is one of the biggest reasons it’s still worth investing in SEO in bid ol’ 2026. Despite the AI uprising, 77% of users will use Google to find information on local businesses. That’s a staggeringly high percentage – and there’s more where that came from.

    7. 60% of smartphone users contact businesses from local search results

Following on with the importance of local SEO, almost two-thirds of smartphone users are actively reaching out to businesses straight from the local search results. It’s become more important than ever to rank well in these particular search engine results, particularly if you depend on local customers and foot traffic.

That’s a key thing to remember: SEO isn’t just about web traffic; good local SEO is crucial for driving people to your premises.

    8. Around 28% of local searches result in a purchase

SEO continues to deliver incredible conversion rates, especially when looking at the local side of things. The most recent statistics indicate that 28% of local searches end with the user buying something – this includes both online and offline purchases.

While the figures aren’t as high for non-local searches, there’s no denying that a clever local SEO strategy can boost your sales.

    9. Google still drives more than 169x as many visits as AI combined

It’s natural to worry about the efficacy of SEO when you see AI platforms like Perplexity or Grok generating a lot of traction. However, the fact remains that Google is still way better at delivering referral traffic to websites across the world.

Every AI platform combined sent 1.13 billion users to the top 1,000 global domains in 2025. By comparison, Google sent 191 billion.

    10. SEO is the most-leveraged marketing channel for 45% of businesses

To give you some context, that’s the highest percentage of businesses of all marketing channels. Both organic social media content and email marketing are the most-leveraged channels for 40% of businesses. The bottom line is that businesses still focus on SEO more than anything else, which tells you just how powerful this channel is.

    11. The majority of Google search traffic comes from mobile users

A pretty incredible statistic, but 66% of traffic on Google is mobile. This signals the emphasis to work on mobile SEO, ensuring your websites are optimised for these mobile users. After all, neglecting this means you miss out on two-thirds of all traffic – which would be absolutely tragic!

    12. 82% of smartphone users turn to search engines when looking for businesses

That’s up from the 77% of all users that we noted earlier, displaying another need for you to invest in SEO for mobile users. People will always use Google when they’re on their phones, which makes SEO one of the must-have tools in your arsenal if you’re marketing a local business.

    13. 95% of people still use search engines regularly

Even though 38% of people now turn to AI tools to help with their daily routines, a whopping 95% still rely on search engines. That means almost 100% of internet users will visit a search engine every day and use it to help them with something. It’s arguably the biggest indicator that SEO is not dead; it’s not even close to dying.

    14. Only 6% of search clicks go to paid ads

If you think it’s smarter to ditch SEO and put all of your money into paid ads, then consider this: 95% of all search clicks go to the organic results. Paid ads only account for 6% of clicks, which is remarkable when you think about it.

    15. 81% of B2B decision-makers trust organic listings

One final stat for you: the majority of B2B decision-makers will always put their faith in organic search engine listings. Once again, this showcases the impact of SEO, particularly in the B2B sector. If you rely on business decision-makers to visit your website and observe your products/services, you can’t ignore search engine optimisation.

The bottom line is that the rumours of SEO’s demise are, clearly, unfounded. As these stats prove, it is well and truly alive and kicking – and it continues to be one of the most profitable and results-driven marketing channels in 2026.
